Freezing $7 billion in Afghanistan

Signed by the US President Joe Biden Friday an executive order allowing the United States to dispose of seven billion dollars from the Afghan Central Bank held with American financial institutions, according to a statement issued by the White House.

Biden, who is resorting to an unprecedented measure, wants to allocate about half of this amount to the compensation demanded by the families of the victims of the September 11 attacks, and spend the other half on humanitarian aid in Afghanistan.
