Biden vows to shut down Nord Stream 2 if Russia invades Ukraine
“If Russia invades Ukraine, which means tanks or troops cross the Ukrainian border, again, then there will be no Nord Stream 2 pipeline,” Biden said at a news conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz at the White House.
“I promise we will put an end to it,” the US president added.
The Nord Stream 2 pipeline aims to double the gas exports of Russian energy giant Gazprom, which flow from Russia directly to Germany, bypassing the traditional route through Ukraine.
The US President stressed that Germany is a “totally reliable” ally in the Ukraine file, and that the United States has “full confidence” in Berlin.
While the German chancellor stressed that Berlin and Washington were “completely in agreement” on the sanctions to be imposed on Russia if it invaded Ukraine, Biden said, “Germany is one of our biggest allies in the world. There is no doubt about the alliance between Germany and the United States.”
