Mangeshkar’s cause of death has not been announced at the age of 92.
Mangeshkar was taken to hospital on January 11 after she was diagnosed with COVID-19, according to Reuters.
Mangeshkar began her singing career in her teens and for 73 years, she sang more than 15,000 songs in 36 languages and dubbed her “The Nightingale”.
Reuters TV partner ANI said, quoting government sources, that two days of public mourning had been declared and the flags at half-mast.
“I feel an indescribable sadness,” Modi said on Twitter.
He added, “The kind and affectionate Lata Didi has left us. She will leave an irreplaceable void in our country. She will be remembered by future generations as a champion of Indian culture and her brave voice had an unparalleled ability to amaze people.”
