The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that these soldiers, who are currently stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, will leave their base “in the coming days” on the orders of Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, and will arrive in Poland “early next week.”
These soldiers, who belong to the 82nd Airborne Division, the main rapid response force in the US Army, were put on standby at the end of January at the request of President Joe Biden, who wanted to reassure his country’s allies in Eastern Europe.
These soldiers will join about two thousand soldiers belonging to the same 82nd Division and its leadership, which Washington announced on February 2 to send to reinforce its forces in Poland (1700 soldiers in Poland and 300 in Germany, where the headquarters of American forces in Europe are).
On Friday, the senior Pentagon official said, “These additional soldiers, numbering in total 5,000 soldiers, constitute a force that is agile, flexible and capable of multi-tasking.”
He explained that these reinforcements “were deployed to reassure NATO allies, to deter a possible attack on the eastern flank of the alliance, to train host country forces and to assist in a wide range of tasks.”
These soldiers are added to the approximately 80,000 American soldiers stationed primarily in Europe, whether permanently or periodically.
On Friday, the United States announced that Russia might invade Ukraine before the Beijing Olympics end on February 20, in a warning that raised more than ever the specter of war in Europe in a dramatic acceleration of events after intense diplomatic efforts that ultimately turned out to be futile.
